Links
The board scene is small now, but it is not dead — boards still answer, directories still list them, and the preservation projects are still scanning. These are the places worth bookmarking, all hand-checked.
Find a board to call
- The Telnet BBS Guide — The longest-running index of boards still answering — telnet, SSH and web.
- The Synchronet BBS List — Actively maintained, with connection addresses, networks and verification dates.
The preservation side
- textfiles.com — Jason Scott's preservation of the era's textfile culture — the deep archive behind every g-file collection like this board's.
- Internet Archive — The institutional home of the era's software, captures and documents.
- BBS: The Documentary — Jason Scott's eight-episode history of the BBS years, told by the people who ran them.
The software that still runs boards
- Synchronet — The BBS software keeping much of the surviving scene alive — and its list is a directory in itself.
- Mystic BBS — The modern classic; a large share of new boards run it.
This project
- sdelic.org — The sister archive: ANSI terminal session captures from the era and the velvet.ath.cx web presence.
- tHe sHacK bBS — The board itself. Pick a handle and apply — the sysop still answers.
The historical list
tHe sHacK kept its own BBS list — a telnet-era list of peers like solarflow.dyndns.org and bbs.hro.nl. It survives in the ANSI archive, a snapshot of the mid-2000s board scene whose members have almost all gone dark. The lists above are the ones still breathing.
