Timeline, 1998–2026
Every entry below is anchored to something that survived: a message date, a file name, a screen. Where the dump can't corroborate a date, the entry says so.
- 1998
tHe sHacK bBS goes online. The board's own span is 1998–2006, but nothing in the surviving filesystem predates December 2001 — the founding years rest on the sysop's account, not on bytes.
Evidence: the board's own history as stated by its sysop; no pre-2001 content exists in the dump - 2001-12-19
The earliest surviving message is written — a system post in the board's first message base. Every date below this line is velvet.ath.cx-era as the filesystem records it; when the hostname itself was first adopted, the record does not say. The host facts are firm though: an OpenBSD i386 machine, the BBS a homebrew C program under the Unix account
bbs(/home/bbs, comment field tHeSHacK).Evidence: earliest decoded message date (scripts base); host facts from the dump's system files and homebrew source - circa 2001–2003
The board also answers under toga.cx — the July 2003 login screen carries “at Toga.cx” in its artwork, and the keycode e-mail flow of the era is remembered on both hostnames. When velvet.ath.cx fully took over, the old art was simply left on disk.
Evidence: LOGIN.old.July2003 artwork in the dump - Mid-era (undated)
The menu you meet in older generations has features that later vanished: the Dynasty door, a fortune teller, a dictionary lookup, and a BBS list credited to user Digital Avatar. The board restyled its menus the way modern sites restyle their CSS — each generation kept on disk.
Evidence: MAINMENU2–MAINMENU5 in data/bbs/text - Undated
The board goes private: the INVITE screen tells callers that tHe sHacK is “now a private system, joinable via only invitation” — an invite password gates new accounts.
Evidence: INVITE screen in data/bbs/text - Until 2005-01
A second BBS engine — DayDream BBS 2.14.9 — is installed alongside the homebrew code under
/home/bbs2and tried as a telnet front-end experiment. Its conferences hold only test posts, and its logs end in January 2005.Evidence: data/bbs2-dd in the dump (DayDream 2.14.9, ddtelnetd experiments) - 2006-04-24
The last message is written in the Bug Notes + News base.
Evidence: bugnotes message dates, decoded from the dump - 2006-09-16
An earlier dump attempt: a multi-volume
dump(8)set whose first volume contains no BBS data — a reminder that the October image very nearly wasn't the whole story.Evidence: DATA_NOTES.md provenance record - 2006-10-26
The last day. Final posts are written to the message bases; at 14:15 a level-0
dump(8)of the system disk (/dev/wd0a, image102006.dmp, 1.53 GB) is taken. The line goes dark, and the board's clock stops with the dump.Evidence: dumpdates and image metadata; latest recovered message 2006-10-26 - 2006–2026
The dump image sits preserved for twenty years. A symlink in the extraction points at a web mirror page (
bbsproject.html) that lived outside the dumped partition — proof the board had a web presence in 2006 that did not survive.Evidence: bbsproject.html symlink stub in the extraction - 2026
The reconstruction: the dump is restored, the binary message/user formats are reverse-engineered from the original C headers, and the board is reopened at theshackbbs.online — the same boards, screens and door lore, running in the browser instead of over a modem. New accounts are once again provisioned by the sysop, and the message numbering continues where October 2006 left off.
Evidence: this site; the reconstruction write-up
The screen that proves the era
Of all the recovered screens, the July 2003 login is the one time forgot: replaced, never deleted, and still carrying the board's earlier hostname in its art.
